Invitation to a joint venture
This is an unique joint venture between Dr. I. Gielen and Prof. dr. H. van Bree from Ghent University, the "Arbeitsgruppe CT der DGK-DVG" and the German Veterinary Association DVG that resulted in the organisation of the 4th International- and 13th CT-user Meeting 2025, scheduled on 21 and 22 November 2025 in a superb historic venue of the Augustijnen Monastery in the City Center of Ghent – Belgium.

A biomedical engineering graduate from UCLouvain, he supports radiology departments in implementing artificial intelligence solutions. Passionate about healthcare innovation, he leverages technology to empower clinical teams and enhance patient care.

Andreas Brühschwein graduated from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich in 2001. Following his doctoral thesis at the Clinic of Small Animal Surgery and Reproduction in Munich, he pursued an alternative residency program with the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging in 2006. His residency included training positions at renowned veterinary teaching hospitals, such as the University of Leipzig (Germany), the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern (Switzerland), and Washington State University in Pullman (USA). He earned the radiology board diploma (ECVDI) in 2009, achieved the German title “Fachtierarzt für Diagnostische Radiologie und Strahlentherapie” in 2010, and was awarded the Venia legendi (Habilitation/Privatdozent) in 2023. In his current role as a faculty member at the Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Unit of the LMU Small Animal Clinic, he oversees radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Casper Crijns-Meijer

Good CT vs Bad CT: image Quality that Matters.

Dr. Casper Crijns-Meijer studied veterinary medicine at Ghent University and finished his studies in 2011. After his studies he started an internship and his PhD research at the department of Medical Imaging under the supervision of prof. dr. Henri van Bree and prof. dr. Ingrid Gielen. Beside his academic work he started in 2013 at the equine clinic in Bodegraven as veterinarian with specific interest in medical imaging and orthopedics. In 2016 he finished his PhD titled “The use and advantages of Computed Tomography in equine medicine evaluated by clinical studies” ,and started working fulltime as senior veterinarian in the equine clinic in Bodegraven part of IVC Evidensia. He is mainly responsible for the medical imaging services (Rx, US, MRI and in the future CT) in the clinic and teleradiology for referring veterinarians within IVC Evidensia NL. Since 2020 he is also the chair of the workscouncil of IVC Evidensia NL. As academic research is a nice alternation beside all day clinical work, he is working on several research projects. He is author of several scientific article in international journals and speaker at several international conferences.

Gabriel Manso Diaz

Asst. Prof. Gabriel Manso Diaz
Graduated from Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain, before completing a Master’s program in research in veterinary sciences. He then went on to complete a PhD in advanced imaging modalities (CT and MRI) for the diagnosis of equine head disorders. After which, he undertook a residency in Diagnostic Imaging (Large Animal Track) at the Royal Veterinary College (London, UK) and obtained board certification in the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.

He is currently Lecturer at the UCM and splits his time between clinical referral work as equine radiologist and teaching and research in large animal diagnostic imaging. He is also Consultant in Equine Diagnostic Imaging at the Royal Veterinary College.

Annelies Decloedt

From a CT-based heart model to novel treatment options for arrhythmias in horses.

Prof. dr. Annelies Decloedt is an associate professor in clinical and communication skills at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University (Belgium). She graduated as an equine veterinarian in 2008 from Ghent University, Belgium and immediately started a PhD fellowship at Ghent University funded by the Research Foundation Flanders, investigating new echocardiographic techniques for quantifying cardiac function in horses.

This PhD was completed in 2012 and was followed by continued clinical research as a postdoctoral research fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders in the field of equine cardiology, ultrasound and exercise physiology. As a member of the Equine Cardioteam Ghent, she is actively involved in research and clinical work equine cardiology. She coordinates and participates in several research projects regarding improved diagnosis and treatment of valvular regurgitation and cardiac arrhythmias in horses.

The Equine Cardioteam at Ghent University has developed several advanced procedures such as pacemaker implantation, electrophysiological studies, myocardial biopsy and complex catheterizations. Ghent University is world-wide the largest center to perform transvenous electrical cardioversion and the only center that performs 3D electro-anatomical mapping of the heart in adult horses combined with ablation of complex arrhythmias.

Walter De Wever

Prof. dr. Walter De Wever
I’m chest radiologist with special interest in chest oncology and interstitial lung disease. I’m trained at the University of Leuven. I obtained my Doctoral Thesis in biomedical science entitled “Role of integrated PET/CT in the staging of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer” in 2008. I’m clinical head at the radiology department of the University Hospitals Leuven. I’m professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. I’m member of the European Society of Thoracic Imaging since 1999, member of the European Society of Radiology since 1999, member of the European Respiratory Society of since 2005. I’m chairman of Assembly 14 ‘Interventional Pulmonology and Imaging” of the European Respiratory Society. I was chairman of the imaging group of the Belgian Radiological Society from 2014 till 2018. I’m also Honored Member of the Radiological Society of South-Africa. I’m author or co-author of more than 80 papers and book chapters. I gave many presentations on national and international congresses. I’m reviewer for many international journals.

Ingrid Gielen

Prof. dr. Ingrid Gielen graduated from Ghent University in Belgium in July 1995 and joined the staff as assistant at the Department of Medical Imaging and Small Animal Orthopaedics, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium. She received a master’s degree in Laboratory Animal Science from Ghent University in 2000. Her PhD thesis was completed with the title “Computed Tomography in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Canine Tarsocrural Osteochondrosis” in 2003. She was president of the European Association of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (EAVDI), 2004-2006.

Since 2004, Dr Gielen has been Division Head at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium and, since 2015, visiting professor at the Department of Radiology and Radiation Hygiene, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia. She is a board member of the International Elbow Working Group and official scrutineer of HD and ED. She was invited speaker at many international conferences on medical imaging and orthopaedics and neurology and is author of more than 185 peer reviewed publications in national and international journals on medical imaging and orthopaedics. She has a particular interest in imaging techniques in joint diseases and neurologic diseases.

Maren Hellige

Dr. Maren Hellige
Maren graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover. She subsequently received her doctoral thesis at the Equine Clinic of the Freie Universität Berlin. She qualified as a veterinary specialist for horses at a private equine hospital in Germany. She is currently at the Equine Clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation. Maren did her alternative residency at the Royal Veterinary College in London. She is Diplomate of the ECVDI.

Federica Rossi

Prof. dr. Federica Rossi graduated from the University of Bologna with 110/110 cum laude in 1993 and received the “Rotary Degree Award” from the Rotary International Institute for the best academic curriculum in Veterinary Medicine of the year.
She started working in private practice alternating periods of training in diagnostic imaging in Italy and in other European countries. From 1995 to 1997, she attended the Specialization School of Veterinary Radiology at the University of Turin, obtaining the Diploma in 1997 with 70/70 cum laude.
In 2000 she spent a period of training in the radiology department at the University of Munich (Germany) working with radiology and CT. In 2014,

Federica Rossi received the prestigious carrier award “Fortunato Rao” from the Veterinarian Italian Council. In 2017, she obtained the Academic Professorship Habilitation and in 2018 the ECVDI qualification in Radiation Oncology (Add-on). Dr. Rossi’s main interests are Computed Tomography, Abdominal Ultrasound, Imaging in Oncology, with special research field regarding the application of ultrasound contrast media in small animals, and interventional radiology.

Susanne Stieger-Vanegas

Prof. dr. Susanne Stieger-Vanegas is a board-certified veterinary radiologist. She earned her veterinary degree from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Austria, in 1995. She initially worked in a small animal clinic in Vienna before pursuing a doctoral program at the same institution, focusing on gallbladder disease in dogs. She subsequently completed a diagnostic imaging residency at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in collaboration with the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich, Switzerland, in 2001. Following her residency, Dr. Stieger-Vanegas served as a lecturer at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, in Uppsala, Sweden. From 2003 to 2007, she completed a PhD program at the University of California, Davis, focusing on ultrasound imaging of tumor angiogenesis and its role in enhancing vascular permeability. This research was conducted at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. In 2009, she joined the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine, where she is currently a full professor. Her research interests include computed tomography and ultrasound applications in gastrointestinal, complex cardiac, and musculoskeletal diseases in dogs and New World Camelids. Additionally, her work explores 3D modeling and printing of intricate disease processes across small, large, and exotic animal species. This research aims to enhance the understanding of complex disease mechanisms, improve student learning tools, and optimize patient outcomes through personalized treatment planning using 3D models.

Yasamin Vali

Dr. Yasamin Vali is an Assistant Professor at the Clinical Division of Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna (Vetmeduni). She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tehran, Iran. Her dedication and passion for veterinary radiology led her to begin the Iranian Residency Program in Radiology in 2012, culminating in a Doctor of Veterinary Science (DVSc) degree and Iranian board certification in veterinary radiology in 2017. Since 2018, Dr. Vali has been working as a radiologist at Vetmeduni Vienna. In 2020, she started the European Residency Program in Diagnostic Imaging (Small Animal Track) and successfully passed the certifying examination in 2024, becoming a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (DipECVDI). She is currently enrolled in the tenure-track program in diagnostic imaging at Vetmeduni Vienna.

Henri van Bree

Prof. dr. Henri van Bree Graduated in 1974 at the Ghent University in Belgium. Since 1991 full professor in medical imaging and orthopaedic surgery at the Department of Medical Imaging and Small Animal Orthopaedics, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ghent, Belgium. PhD at the University of Utrecht, Holland, Department of Radiology on the “comparative imaging in the canine shoulder”. From 2001 till 2015 head of the Department of Medical Imaging and Small Animal Orthopaedics.

Is a Diplomate of both the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI) and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).

He received in 2014 the Richard-Völker-Medaille from the DGK-DVG – Kleintiere. Author of about 250 publications on medical imaging and orthopaedics.

Invited speaker at about 150 international conferences on medical imaging and small animal arthroscopy. CEO of VetMedImage, teleradiology. Research topics: comparative imaging in small animal joint disease.
